Water Shortages II: an undervalued Trouble Spot in the Near- and Middle-East

Image
-- an SWM THiNKTANK article In a recent article [ 1 ] the economic aspects of water shortages were addressed. This article continues with a more geo-political consideration of water shortages, summarizing some selected recent news and providing some general insights concentrating on the Near- and Middle-East (NEME). As documented in a number of reports the NEME-region was and is characterised by a sensitivity for water shortages [ 2 ]. Depending upon aspects like topography, hydrological regimes and water supply technology water supply issues are more or less severe. Jordan, for example, has been recognised as a country being subject to a severe water-stress [ 3 ]-[ 6 ] having one of the worlds lowest levels of water resource availability, per capita [ 6 ] . Other countries, like Iraq, formerly were not as severely subject to water shortages [ 2 ] . However, also the most recent history (e.g. Gulf War I + II) left a more or less destroyed water processing infrastructure resulting i

Water Shortages: an undervalued (economic) Trouble Spot

Image
-- an SWM THiNKTANK article Though rarely addressed in prominent (mass)media, water - its availability, its processing and its cleaning - attracts steadily growing interest. Browsing through the past months reports and statements seems to reveal that the awareness for potential conflicts with regard to water has notably increased [ 1 ], [ 2 ]. Key sensitive regions seem to be the near and the middle East [ 3 ]-[ 5 ] as well as the south-east Asian region [ 6 ]-[ 8 ]. As a consequence, the economic growth of concerned regions is projected to be negative [ 9 ]-[ 11 ] and solutions are requested. Another issue that slightly appears on the table - and that has been addressed in the recent statements as well - is the question for which purpose water is to be used and in which priority? Does the supply of humen with drinking water posses a higher priority than the generation of electric power (hydro energy)? Is the use of water (bodies) as resource for industrial purposes more important th
